Avec cette œuvre emblématique réalisée en bronze à la fin des années 1990, Mauro Corda propose une illustration de la barbarie humaine. Sept corps, grandeur nature, sont suspendus dans les airs : décharnés, émaciés, tels des pendus abandonnés après avoir été torturés. Leur grande force expressive et la graduation de l’altération de leur état créent dans l’œil du spectateur un véritable crescendo de douleur. En nommant chaque dépouille d’après un jour de la semaine, l’artiste installe la sauvagerie dans une temporalité universelle.
Cette œuvre a été présentée à la Samaritaine à Paris en l’an 2000. Intitulé « Jamais plus », l’événement avait pour but de créer une prise de conscience de la cruauté à l’heure où l’humanité quittait le siècle qui a vu, entre autres, la Grande Guerre et la Shoah.
This bronze sculpture created at the end of the 90s is truly emblematic in Mauro Corda’s artwork. The artist gives an illustration of human cruelty. Seven life-size bodies hang in the air. They are scrawny and emaciated like a hanged person abandoned after a moment of torture. Their strong expression and the graduation of their body deterioration create a crescendo of suffering in the spectator’s eye. By naming each corpse with a day of the week, the artist places this savage situation in a universal timing.
This artwork was exhibited at the Samaritaine in Paris on the occasion of the new Century. The event “Never again” aimed to raise awareness about human brutality after a Century affected by the Great War and the holocaust.
